Sun Harvest has been doing mechanical orchard pruning since 1995. We’re a family business out of Linden, California, established in 1991, and topping and hedging is the core of what we do. Our crews top and hedge orchards for growers in Lodi, Linden, Stockton and the rest of San Joaquin County, and we travel throughout the Central Valley.
What we cut
- Topping up to 24′. A flat cut across the top of the canopy to bring tree height down.
- High-angle hedging up to 45′. An angled cut along the sides of the canopy.
- Narrow hedging down to 2′. A close side cut for tight rows.
- Skirting. Trimming the lower branches to lift the canopy up off the ground.
- V-cut. A V-shaped cut that opens up the top of the tree.
- A-cut. Angled cuts on both sides so the row narrows toward the top, like the letter A.
Crops we work in
We top and hedge almonds, walnuts, pistachios, pecans, olives, cherries, peaches and pears. We also trim windbreaks.

Common questions
When is the best time to top and hedge?
Post harvest.
How often should an orchard be topped or hedged?
We top and hedge annually, after harvest.
What’s the difference between topping, hedging and narrow hedging?
Topping cuts the top of the canopy flat to control tree height; we top up to 24′. Hedging cuts the sides of the canopy at an angle; we hedge up to 45′. Narrow hedging is a close side cut, down to 2′, for tight rows. We also do skirting, V-cuts and A-cuts.
